Blaine attempting to break the world breath holding recordYesterday I mentioned David Blaine’s attempt to break the world record for holding your breath underwater, whilst chained into a water filled sphere, in which he has lived for the previous week! The current record is around 9 minutes!

Well, last night was the finale and Blaine managed to hold his breath for more than seven minutes before needing to be rescued from the sphere. He had managed to free his hands from the chains but not his feet. There had been concerned during the week that the week long immersion in the sphere was causing harm to his body.

Its weird. If the guy had succeeded I feel that I would have called it a bit phony, but as he failed I have a lot more respect for what he did. Holding your breath for seven minutes is a great achievement, and shows how much training he must have done to be able to do that. This report from the BBC website states that Blaine had lost around 50lbs weight before the event, enabling his body to use oxygen more efficiently.

After the rescue, appearing shaken and weak, he thanked his supporters and left for hospital.

“This was a very difficult week but you all made it fly by with your strong spirit, your energy, thank you so much everybody,” Blaine told a cheering crowd in Lincoln Square.

I guess at the moment David will be more concerned about his health and recovering from the stunt than thinking about the next one, but I am sure it will be equally (foolhardy) brave
