I reported a while ago about Mark Threadgold and his preparations for a 100mtr trimix dive to take place in the Red Sea, in order to raise money for St Dunstans. Well, we have received news that he has successfully pulled it off and completed a 103 mtr dive at the Blue Hole site in Dahab on June 16th 2006.
From Divemagazine;
A Former Royal Corps of Signals sergeant, Threadgold lost his sight in 1999 after suffering head injuries in an accident. He learned to dive five years before he lost his sight, but was determined to carry on after the accident.
‘I’m thrilled to have achieved this record, but it will take a while to sink in,’ Threadgold said. ‘I was a bit nervous beforehand but things couldn’t have gone more smoothly.’
He said he hoped the record would raise the profile of St Dunstan’s, a charity which helps rehabilitate blind ex-servicemen and women. This is not the first time the father-of-two has broken blind world records. He set the 99.19mph blind powerboat speed record and the speed record for circumnavigating the Isle of Wight.
‘As with any challenge in life, it only takes a bit of inspiration, courage and support from those around you and the world is your oyster - disability really doesn’t have to be an obstacle to achievement,’ Threadgold added.
