Boy saves his older brother by performing CPR after freediving accident June 16, 2006

Taylor Smith was lucky to have been freediving with his brother on a freediving trip to Blue Spring Cave. The cave is 120ft deep and freedivers sometimes find air pockets which accumulate due to expelled air from scuba divers exiting the cave. It seems Taylor found one of these pockets and fell unconscious. He was then dragged out of the cave by his brother, Wesley Smith and another buddy, Brian Cummings, and the help of other divers.

Bush creates world’s largest marine sanctuary June 16, 2006

Hawaiian reef map of new marine sanctuaryUS President George W Bush has designated a number of Hawaiian islands as a marine sanctuary. The area, which is nearly as big as California, supports more than 7,000 species, of which a significant number are unique and occur nowhere else. The islands are uninhabited and are important breeding grounds for sea turtles, and are home to the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

Scuba Diving Pioneer Dick Anderson Passes Away In California June 15, 2006

Dick AndersonDick Anderson, a Diving Hall of Fame member, died aged 73 from ALS (Lou Gerig’s Disease) after a long period of illness. He was one of the pioneers in the diving industry, having invented a number of pieces of equipment, including the first o-ring first stage, and the original Scubapro single hose regulator. He also produced many award winning underwater films and was the Divemaster on the set of Jaws: the revenge.

Deepoutdoors Unveils New Buoyancy Compensator June 15, 2006

Deep Outdoors D2 BCI use a wing for my buoyancy as I have always felt that it performs better underwater, but many other divers prefer the stability on the service that a Jacket BC provides. DeepOutdoors have been working on a design for the past four years which apparently satisfies both requirements.

The BC consists of two bladders, one for the wing part (back bladder) and one for the front of the BC. Using a Dual Inflation system the BC transfers air from the back bladder to the front bladder when a diver surfaces providing the diver a more upright, natural position.

PADI Receives Official Recognition in Greece June 15, 2006

I mentioned a while ago, that the Greek laws regarding scuba diving were changing and scuba diving was now permitted in many previously prohibited sites. PADI have recently been recognised as a training agency by Greece and PADI instructors are now allowed to work in Greece. From the press release;

Secret spy diver report revealed June 14, 2006

Lionel Buster CrabbThere is an interesting article on the BBC website regarding the disappearance of a navy frogman during the cold war. On 19th April 1956, Commander Lionel ‘Buster’ Crabb vanished whilst spying on the Soviet Cruiser, Ordzhonikidze, which had brought Nikita Khrushchev on a diplomatic visit. He never returned, and when the disappearance was noticed, the whole mission was subsequently denied, and it was discovered that tno rescue mission was carried out as the intelligence service did not want to alert the crew of the Soviet ship.
