Robert Hewitts ordeal recaptured, 75 hours floating in the seaI wrote about Robert Hewitt when his ordeal was first announced. Whilst scuba diving off the Kapiti Coast near Mana Island Robert went missing and search efforts failed to locate him. Amazingly he was found 75 hours later after having floated in the ocean with no food or water, other than some shellfish he had collected whilst diving.

It seems that his ordeal is going to be made into a documentary, and Studio 178 are currently beginning the project which will involve 15 days of filming and six weeks of post-production work, the documentary expecting to be screened early 2007. This from stuff.co.nz;

There has still been no sign of Ashley Mauldin, who disappeared in the Gulf of Mexico, in what was her first dive in the ocean. The US Coastguard belives she drowned, but her family are still hoping for a miracle, says kotv.com;

“You know she was my very best friend.” Charlotte Callis is still in the worst two weeks of her life, wondering if her daughter, Ashley Mauldin is dead, and if her body will ever be found. “Everybody we’ve talked to says that you don’t vanish in the gulf in 30 feet of water, it just doesn’t happen, so we don’t know, we’re heartbroken and we don’t know what happened.”

Searching for the Griffon, the Great Lakes own Jewel July 24, 2006

I found an interesting story in petoskeynews.com regarding the search for a wreck called the Griffon, which sank in the Great Lakes. The Griffon was the first European vessel to sail the upper Great Lakes - and the first of many shipwrecks. The ship was sailed by the legendary French explorer, Rene-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, and was intended to carry furs to support La Salle’s expedition to find the mouth of the Mississippi. From the article;

During its return maiden voyage, Sept. 18, 1679, the Griffon sailed out from the present day Washington Harbor on Washington Island, in northern Lake Michigan, and it was never seen again. Historians have pondered the whereabouts of the missing ship for centuries.

I have just seen this press release regarding the upcoming dive exhibition, OzTek 07, to be held in Sidney, Australia on 17th and 18th March 2007. They look to have collected a great range of speakers, including Leigh Bishop, Cedric Verider, Jarrod Jablonski, Kevin Gurr, Dr Simon Mithcell, John Chatterton, and Peter Buzzacott. Many of the speakers are from the UK and USA, so this means that they are making quite an effort to attend. From the OzTek website;
