Scuba divers aim to break record at quarry in area August 8, 2006

Earlier in the year I mentioned the world record for the most number of scuba divers diving at the same time held in the Maldives. Jeff Rice, owner of Portage Quarry, south of Bowling Green, reckons he has a chance of beating the record this weekend at the quarry. This from toledoblade.com;

The world-record attempt is among several activities planned this weekend at Portage Quarry, just south of Bowling Green. The Legends of Diving Weekend will bring in pioneers of scuba diving, historians, and, if all goes to plan, hundreds of divers.

“Over a year ago, I decided that most of the dive people, the actual people who were instrumental in the sport itself, are leaving us every day,” said Mr. Rice, owner of Portage Quarry Recreational Club Inc. “Eventually they’re not going to be here, and the story won’t be told of what happened in the beginning.”

The beginning was a long time before divers dropped to the depths of the ocean wearing insulated suits and technical gear, Mr. Rice said. The beginning of recreational diving came about with the likes of Sam Lecocq and Sam Miller, who will both be on hand this weekend to share their experiences of the early days of diving.
