Posted by Andy Carroll in : Accidents, Rebreathers , trackback

Sad news yesterday that a 40 year old diver using an AP Inspiration rebreather was found dead near the wreck he had been lost on the previous day. There is some speculation over at Rebreatherworld that the diver had been trapped or pinned under the wreck, but that is unconfirmed. Here is the press release;

A 40-year old male diver that had been missing near the south end of the Los Angeles Channel since yesterday, was found this morning near the wreck three miles off shore where he had been diving.

In a joint effort, local agencies started searching for the missing diver yesterday afternoon.

Involved in the search were assets from the Coast Guard, the LA County Sherrif’s Department, Los Angeles Fire Department, LA Port Police, and LA Police.

Today, the Incident Command and agency assets were staged out of the Coast Guard base in San Pedro where the the divers body was also brought and delivered to the county coroner.

The Coast Guard had received a report yesterday, of a missing diver from the vessel “Salty V”. The Coast Guard initially responded to the call with a helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles and a 25-foot Response Boat from Station Los Angeles-Long Beach. The Coast Guard was joined in the search by the other agencies and continued operations until dusk last night.

The cause of death and identification of the diver will be confirmed by the County Coroner.

Okay, so this isn’t the first dive fatality I’ve heard about like this, but I never hear the news explain WHY it happened, i.e. why was this diver diving without his buddy? Is that usually when such accidents happen, or maybe did he simply lose his buddy, and after looking around for him his buddy surfaced without him, hoping to meet at the surface?
Why do you think these sorts of accidents happen?

Just found your site thru WikiScuba. Pretty good idea.
Thanks and take care.
