Scuba Diver survives three days at sea September 6, 2006
Posted by Andy Carroll in : Accidents, News, OceanDiving , trackbackA scuba diver who was diving near Fermain Bay in Guernsey was found on Monday evening after being lost at sea for three days. Matthew Harvey, 35, was admitted to Princess Elizabeth Hospital suffering from extreme exhaustion.
This is quite a feat, and lucky I guess that it is summer where the sea temperature is 15 degC or so. Still, he must have been wearing some sensible thermal gear and a drysuit to keep the hypothermia at bay.
Members of his family said they were “very relieved” at his rescue.
His father, Dan Harvey, said: “He was able to recognise us and make a few jokes. When he saw his mother, he apologised to her for the trouble. “This morning he was having tea and toast and talking with the nurses.”
Chief ambulance officer Neil Tucker said: “It is unusual to survive three days, but not impossible. “It all depends on buoyancy aids, sea temperature and a lot of other factors.”

[…] I just can’t figure out what Matthew harvey was thinking when he decided to set up this hoax. I recently covered the story of Matthew Harvey being lost at sea for three days and being found by a passing yacht. It turns out that Matthew had actually been on a ferry trip to the UK instead of floating in the sea being protected by dolphins, as he claimed. He apparently got on a ferry to the UK Saturday lunchtime, and then returned Monday evening, just one and a half hours before being found by a yacht crew. This from the BBC; In a statement, police said he had been in the UK while he was missing. Mr Harvey was unavailable for comment. […]
