Scuba dive firm to face trial over death September 13, 2006

This court case in Australia highlights some of the problems diving centres have when renting equipment to inexperienced divers. The trouble is, in my experience, many scuba divers do not advertise just how inexperienced they are, which makes things difficult for the dive centres when organising divers on a boat. Surely his ‘friends’ should have kept an eye on him? This from news.com.au;

Melbourne Magistrates’ Court was told Mr Grant, a debt recovery service account manager from Clayton, in south-east Melbourne, was an inexperienced scuba diver, despite having attained his PADI certificate 18 months earlier.

He had joined the dive boat with two friends, who claimed in court they were hurried into the water by the boat crew because of a limited timeframe and optimum diving conditions.

Mr Grant was seen to struggle with his mask before disappearing from view.

Moments later, Mr Grant was pulled from under the water and taken ashore but could not be revived.

it’s so sad when any diver dies in your sport, but the certification process should first teach a diver not to dive if anyahing (conditions, equipment, buddy, other divers, lack of having a dive master close by, etc.) aren’t right.
And where was his buddy?

Most of the time when I’ve hired kit (in the UK) I’ve been asked to show my certification card. Even when I’ve just hired a tank. I guess this is not the answer though as you can qualify with minimal experience, then not do any diving for years and still be considered “qualified”. I think at the end of the day it is your own responsibility to keep yourself safe. Don’t dive if you’re not happy and make sure your up to it before going back into the water after a long time off diving. Accident figures rise noticeably here in the UK as soon as the waters begin to warm up after the winter.
