Earlier in the year I mentioned the world record for the most number of scuba divers diving at the same time held in the Maldives. Jeff Rice, owner of Portage Quarry, south of Bowling Green, reckons he has a chance of beating the record this weekend at the quarry. This from toledoblade.com;

The world-record attempt is among several activities planned this weekend at Portage Quarry, just south of Bowling Green. The Legends of Diving Weekend will bring in pioneers of scuba diving, historians, and, if all goes to plan, hundreds of divers.

Scuba diving not seen to impair lung function July 31, 2006

Apparently there are reports out there which state that scuba divers have an accelerated decline in lung function. Reuters have recently reported on a German Naval Institute study which disputes these claims;

“Obstructive changes in lung function have been reported with cumulative scuba diving exposure,” Dr. Kay Tetzlaff, of the University of Tuebingen, and colleagues write in the medical journal Chest.

To look into this, the researchers studied in 468 military scuba divers and a comparison ‘control’ group of 122 military submariners, all of them men. Specifically, the team tracked the participants’ decline over time in lung performance — measured as the maximum volume of air expired in 1 second (called the FEV1).

Baby dolphins sleep while swimming June 29, 2006

I have heard of scuba divers sleeping whilst on deco, and I have seen many scuba divers asleep ten minutes after getting back onboard the dive boat, but that is nothing compared to baby dolphins, who regularly sleep whilst swimming, says an Italian research team;

“During their first year of life, young bottlenose dolphins sleep exclusively while swimming and, like all young mammals, have irregular sleep patterns, distributed both through the day and at night, for around 12 hours in total,” said the research team, Guido Gnone, Tiziana Moriconi and Giorgia Gambini .

“As they grow older, dolphins tend to reduce their hours of daytime sleep, while night sleep stabilizes at seven to eight hours .

“This development in sleep patterns reflects that of land mammals, including that of human beings” .

The study overturns the findings of research published last year by US and Russian experts, which concluded that the constant movement of newborn dolphins and their mothers meant the mammals were barely sleeping .

A 70ft (21mtr) deep sand pit which contains remains of a mammoth and a sabre tooth tiger may soon be flooded and open to divers, according to LocalNewsLeader. The owner wants to flood the 50 acre pit and will be helped by local Dive Center owner, Mike Cryer;

“This is a dream come true,” Mike Cryer, who runs a dive shop in nearby Lake Jackson, said as he gazed over the hole up to 70 feet deep that by next year could become Mammoth Lake. Cryer and his wife will help with the project‘s design and manage the operation.

Dive Portal DVD Magazine Released June 14, 2006

Posted by Andy Carroll in : Trivia , 1 comment so far

John Chatterton and Richie Kohler, stars of the Shadow Divers and Deep Sea Detectives TV Shows, have released a Diving magazine on DVD.

The first issue of the magazine is out now and covers diving in a number of destinations;

For this first Issue, they visit one of their favorite Pacific dive destinations, Palau. Somewhat less in the mainstream is their technical rebreather dive to the bottom of the Blue Hole in Belize. They also visit Key Largo and the training ground for our NASA astronauts, the Aquarius Habitat. Winter is the season for scallops in Maine, and the guys go diving for dinner in Casco Bay, near John’s home. They also visit the Our World Underwater dive show in Chicago, talk with Stan Waterman about his new book Sea Salt, and have a conversation with diving pioneer, Evelyn Dudas.

The press release says that the first issue is available from diveportaldvd.com for $20 plus shipping, but when I visited the purchase button didn’t work, so hopefully it will be available soon. (EDIT: The purchase button pops up a screen on your browser. I didn’t see it before)
