Scuba divers aim to break record at quarry in area August 8, 2006

Jeff Rice, owner of Portage Quarry, south of Bowling Green, reckons he has a chance of beating the record this weekend at the quarry. This from toledoblade.com;
The world-record attempt is among several activities planned this weekend at Portage Quarry, just south of Bowling Green. The Legends of Diving Weekend will bring in pioneers of scuba diving, historians, and, if all goes to plan, hundreds of divers.

Scuba Diver dies after dive off Plymouth Coast August 7, 2006

Richard Lewis, 57, died after a 30 minute dive on the Poulmic which lies in 18 mtrs. It looks like it might be the result of a medical problem given the conservative dive plan and the information published so far. From the Melton Mowbray Today;
Scuba Divers swim across the English Channel for Cancer Research August 7, 2006
Posted by Andy Carroll in : News, OceanDiving , add a commentA great effort over the weekend was organised by the Orchard Cancer Appeal Charity, during which a group of six men and one woman scuba dived, relay style, across the Channel. Each diver swam for around 30 minutes before handing the task over to the next diver. The swim took twelve hours, meaning each diver carried out two dives or so. This from BBC;
Polish navy finds wreck of Graf Zeppelin August 3, 2006

I found this via Divester, that the Polish Navy have announced they may have found the Nazi aircraft carrier, the Graf Zeppelin. I say ‘may’, but they are ‘99.9% certain’. Nobody as yet, has actually dived the wreck and it has been explored so far using submersibles, but it lies in 86 mtrs of water. Amazingly the ship never saw combat due to political squabbles within the Nazi party, and Hitler’s disenchantment with the German Navy, and it was eventually sunk by the Soviets after being used for dive bombing practice, in 1947. Freediving Taylor Smith craves the caves despite dangers August 2, 2006

Taylor Smith, 17, recently suffered a seizure on his way to the surface after breathing a carbon dioxide filled pocket in a cave in Orange City’s spring. He was lucky enough to be rescued by his younger brother, Wesley, who had been taught CPR from his mother, and managed to save his life.
Incredibly, Taylor is seemingly unrepentant and will undoubtedly start freediving again, after the enforced six month layoff. This from news journalonline;
For Taylor Smith, there’s a brazen thrill in holding his breath and diving deep into the cave from which Blue Spring flows.
“I like feeling like I went down there with nothing,” said Smith, 17. “It’s a lot more hard-core (than scuba-diving).”
Divers discover World War One sub off Lothian coast July 31, 2006
Posted by Andy Carroll in : News, WreckDiving , add a commentThe South Queensferry Sub Aqua Club (SQSAC) have become the centre of attention after finding what is thought to be a World War I submarine. Initially believing it was a trawler on their first trip, the divers visited again and found that it was a sub. They are now waiting for information from the Admiralty before they decide to ecplore further, as they have no idea whether any lives were lost when the vessel sank. This from the Scotsman;
AN intact First World War submarine has been discovered in deep waters off Eyemouth after divers initially mistook it for a sunken fishing trawler.
